Carpet Recycling

Carpet Recycling
Carpet recycling now is very necessary and important. Carpets are widely used in industrial and commercial facilities as well as in residential fields. According to the data provided by CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort), in the United States alone, an estimated 5 billion pounds of carpet are discarded every year. Carpet poses waste management problems – due to its bulky size, it consumes a large amount of landfill space whilst landfill capacity continues to decline. Incineration is also not a recommended solution because it releases toxic chemicals into the air, resulting in air pollution. Considering these facts, there is a social necessity and responsibility to recycle and reuse post-consumer carpets.

Carpet usually is composed of two parts, the face fiber and the backing. The face fiber is the part of the carpet that you see and walk on and it can be made from different materials, the common fiber types are Nylon, Polypropylene (also known as olefin), PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), Wool, Acrylics and PTT (Polyethylene Trimethylene Terephthalate). The backing is mostly latex and PVC (polyvinylchloride).

Carpet shredder in carpet recycling
The recycling process of post-consumer carpets varies with different face fiber materials, but the size reduction process e.g. cutting large pieces of carpet into smaller sizes is often needed in most recycling processes. Shredded carpet can be directly used as cover materials at landfills. With further washing, separation, drying processes or other chemical procedures, scrap carpet can be used in manufacturing new products like composite lumber, automotive parts, stepping stones, etc. There are even efforts undertaking now to recover the energy content from old carpets as they are made from crude oil.

Carpet shredder not only solves the tedious and voluminous waste carpet and fabrics but also boosts the sustainability of the carpet fiber and fabrics. It is hazardous to discard carpets and rugs in landfills, since they contain many toxic chemicals, primarily in adhesives and stain protectants. On the other side, the fabrics and polymers contain a high BTU value, making it an ideal item for waste-to-fuel.

Benefits of Deploying a Carpet Shredder
Wiscon’s Carpet recycling shredder can process carpet in rolls or bales or loose forms. The shredding capacity achieves from 500kg/hr to 3o00kg/hr, depending on the power and model of the shredder machine. The final shredded particles are smaller for recycling and or pelletizing. The shredded fiber is a great source of RDF (refuse-derived fuel), because it contains a huge valoric value for the waste to the energy market.

Another advantage of using a car shredder is reducing the cost of transportation. It takes a big money to relocate the waste carpet from households or manufacturers. A shredding service company can downsize the carpets quickly.

In the case of polyester-based materials, carpet shredding results in polyester regrind. After pelletizing, the PE resin can be applied to produce new fibers for use in new polyester fabrics.

Carpet Shredder – Single Shaft Shredder
Carpets are thick and often made with polymers and fabrics in multiple layers

Industrial Shredder for Textile Recycling

The carpet shredding is conducted in one machine (single shaft shredder). A high-speed plus high torque rotor crushes carpets into 40mm by 40mm particles. A pusher forces carpets to get in touch with the rotor. The workload is monitored so the pusher can retract to adjust the workload. The overall process is fully automated, but feeding shall be carried out manually. The shredder is simple in construction, easing the service and operation.

We recommend facilitating a vacuum suction, in order to keep the workplace air clean.

Carpet Shredder Applications
Carpet Shredder can shred Carpets, rugs, old clothes, confidential uniforms, garments, All edge trim, remnants, offcuts, textile materials from the production process.
