How To Recycle Plastic Car Bumpers: Key Processes of Car Bumper Recycling

Time:2025-07-28

With the rapid development of the automotive industry, the disposal of waste car bumpers has become a key issue in the field of environmental protection and resource recycling. Car bumper recycling, especially through paint stripping, not only prevents harmful substances in the paint from polluting the environment but also allows plastic substrates to be reused in production. This is crucial for plastic car bumper recycling, as it reduces the exploitation of new resources and energy consumption. Such an approach combines ecological and economic value.

 Process Of Car Bumper Recycling

1.The recycling process starts with crushing materials, where waste bumpers are disassembled into small pieces to create basic conditions for subsequent processes.
2.After crushing, the material enters the dosing screw (2 units) and variable frequency feeding hopper, which precisely controls the amount of material and agent added to ensure stable subsequent reactions.
3.Then, the materials are transported by a screw feeder to an abrasive machine to remove the paint from the plastic.
4.The materials enter the abrasive machine and undergo a process of adding caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) for high-temperature washing, with each batch handling 500 kg and lasting 40 minutes. In a high-temperature environment, caustic soda reacts chemically with the paint, destroying the paint’s molecular structure and causing it to peel off from the plastic substrate. This achieves initial separation of “paint-plastic” and reduces the burden of subsequent cleaning, which is a key step in chemical paint stripping.
5.After paint stripping, the materials are sent to a friction cleaning machine via a screw feeder. Mechanical friction combined with cleaning agents deeply removes residual paint residues and chemicals, restoring the cleanliness of the plastic surface.
6.After cleaning, the dehydrator quickly removes excess water, which not only facilitates material transportation but also creates dry conditions for the subsequent brine separation process. By this point, the paint is basically removed, and the plastic substrate enters the recycling process.
7.25℃ Brine Tank: The dehydrated materials are put into a 25℃ brine tank, and separation is achieved using density differences. Metals, wires, and paint foam sink due to their high density and are removed as impurities; plastics float due to their low density, are processed by a dehydrator, and the main plastic body is initially screened out.

15℃ Brine Tank: After dehydration, the materials are transferred to a 15℃ brine tank. A small amount of high-density plastics sink and are separated, and the floating plastics are dehydrated again to further subdivide types, paving the way for precise recycling.

Characteristics of Car Bumper Recycling

1.Process Synergy: It adopts a synergistic mode of “chemical paint stripping + physical cleaning + density separation”. Chemical paint stripping (caustic soda high-temperature reaction) initially separates paint from plastic; physical cleaning (friction and dehydration) deeply removes residues; density separation (brine and clear water tanks) classifies plastics. This synergy ensures efficient car bumper recycling.

2.Controllable and Standardized Processes: From the precise control of material and agent input in pretreatment to the standardized operation of “500 KG per batch, 40 minutes per batch” in paint stripping, and then to gradient density separation, the entire process of plastic car bumper recycling is standardized and controllable, ensuring stable and efficient operation.

3.Targeted Treatment: It focuses on the core challenge of “paint-plastic separation”. High-temperature reaction with caustic soda destroys the paint structure to achieve initial separation, and combined with multi-stage cleaning and sorting, it ensures the recycled plastic meets reuse standards, which is a key feature of car bumper recycling.

Significance of Car Bumper Recycling

1.Environmental Protection: Car bumper recycling avoids environmental pollution caused by harmful substances in the paint of waste bumpers, reducing potential hazards to soil and water from the source.

2.Resource Regeneration: It enables the recovery of plastic substrates from bumpers, reintroducing them into production. This reduces reliance on new plastic resources, lowers energy consumption in resource extraction and new material production, and realizes the circular utilization of resources, which is the core of plastic car bumper recycling.

3.Economic and Industrial Value: By “turning waste into treasure”, car bumper recycling transforms waste bumpers into renewable resources, forming an economic chain of resource regeneration. It also provides a feasible path for the automotive recycling industry, promoting its green development.
