How To Operate Heavy Duty Knife Sharpener

Time:2025-08-08
A heavy duty knife sharpener is a key equipment used for grinding large and heavy cutting tools in metal processing. Its correct operation is crucial to grinding quality, equipment service life and personnel safety. Before operation, full preparations must be made: check whether the power supply and air source connections are stable, ensure that the voltage and air pressure meet the rated parameters of the equipment; check the lubrication of moving parts such as guide rails and lead screws, and add special lubricating oil as needed; check whether the grinding wheel is installed firmly, has no cracks, and its model matches the material of the tool to be ground, and at the same time confirm that the protective devices are intact and the emergency stop button functions normally. For the tool to be ground, clean the surface oil, iron filings and rust, check the wear condition to determine the grinding amount and angle, select a suitable fixture and ensure it is firmly installed. Operators must wear protective glasses, dust masks, anti-slip gloves, earplugs and other protective supplies.
When starting the machine, first ensure that there are no unrelated personnel or obstacles around the equipment. Start the equipment for idling for 1-2 minutes, observe whether the rotation direction of the grinding wheel is correct, whether there is abnormal vibration or noise, and confirm that all buttons and handles are flexible to operate. Then set parameters according to the tool material and grinding requirements. The grinding speed is usually controlled at 15-30m/s to avoid the grinding wheel from breaking. For initial grinding, a small feed rate of 0.01-0.05mm per time is adopted. Set the grinding angle through the angle positioning device, and use a protractor for auxiliary inspection if necessary.

During the grinding operation, place the tool stably in the fixture and clamp it firmly. For long strip tools, additional auxiliary supports are needed to prevent deformation. At the same time, adjust the tool position so that the grinding point is aligned with the center plane of the grinding wheel. First, perform a small amount of trial grinding, observe whether the trajectory and angle meet expectations, stop the machine for inspection after trial grinding, and adjust in time if there is a deviation. During formal grinding, keep the tool in stable contact with the grinding wheel. For manual feeding, turn the handle at a constant speed. Clean the iron filings with a non-metallic brush in time, and avoid direct contact with hands. Pay attention to the temperature of the grinding area. If the tool is burnt black or discolored, stop the machine immediately to check the cooling system. If necessary, reduce the feed rate or pause for cooling. For large multi-edge tools, grind them one by one in order to ensure consistent parameters.

When stopping the machine, first move the tool away from the grinding wheel, turn off the grinding wheel rotation switch, and take down the tool after the grinding wheel has completely stopped. Then turn off the main power supply and air source, and clean up the iron filings and coolant residues on the surface of the equipment and around it. In terms of equipment maintenance, when not in use for a long time, the grinding wheel needs to be disassembled and stored properly, clean the iron filings on the guide rails and fixtures and add lubricating oil to prevent rust, record the operation status and grinding parameters of the equipment, check the wear of the grinding wheel, and replace it in time if necessary.

Safety must also be paid attention to during operation: it is strictly forbidden to carry out clamping, adjustment or cleaning work when the equipment is running, and it is forbidden to remove the protective devices; if an abnormality occurs, press the emergency stop button immediately and cut off the power supply to check for faults; it is forbidden to grind unexpected materials to avoid the grinding wheel from cracking; operators must receive professional training, be familiar with the equipment performance and emergency treatment procedures, and it is strictly forbidden to operate without a license or change parameters without authorization. Following these specifications can effectively ensure grinding accuracy and efficiency, reduce safety risks, and extend the service life of the equipment. In actual operation, details need to be adjusted in combination with the specific equipment manual.
